first_imgCricketing legend Arjuna Ranatunga, who was Sri Lanka’s petroleum minister until Friday, has been arrested over a shooting that killed a person.Spokesperson of the Sri Lankan Ruwan Gunasekera told news agency Reuters, “Colombo Crime division arrested Ranatunga over the shooting incident and he will be produced to the court shortly.”The political crises in Sri Lanka took an ugly turn on Sunday when bodyguards of 54-year-old Ranatunga, a loyalist of sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, fired live rounds at the supporters of the new premier Mahinda Rajapaksa, leaving one person dead.One person succumbed to his injuries and two others were hospitalised in the shooting incident and a security personnel was arrested at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) premises in Dematagoda following a tense situation.Ranathunga was the captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team when it won the world cup in 1996.On Saturday, President Maithripala Sirisena dissolved Parliament and the cabinet after he appointed a new prime minister on Friday.Since then, members of trade unions linked to the new prime minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, have blocked ministers from the old cabinet from entering their ministries.Police said earlier that in an altercation on Sunday when Ranatunga tried to enter his office, his security guard shot and killed one person and wounded two.(With inputs from agencies)ALSO READ | Sri Lankan political crisis explained in 10 pointsALSO READ | US calls on Sri Lanka president to immediately reconvene parliamentlast_img
