Arsenal transfer report: Could Gunners move again for ‘fed up’ Madrid star?

first_img Karim Benzema 1 Arsenal may be tempted into making another move for Karim Benzema after the striker revealed he is ‘fed up’ with the amount of times he is substituted by Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez. The Frenchman scored his seventh goal of the season as Los Blancos were held to a 1-1 draw in the Madrid derby on Sunday. But Benzema was taken off six minutes before Real conceded an 83rd-minute equaliser and the 27-year-old was left bemused by his manager’s decision.“Substitutions are what the coach decides, I’m just there to help my team-mates,” Benzema told AS.“It’s true I’m fed up of being taken off. I’m calm and will continue to work so I’m not always substituted. He took me off to get a result, for defensive reasons.“It’s true that the electronic board always shows the No.9. Ask Benitez why that is.”last_img read more

Arsenal 2-0 Bournemouth: Mesut Ozil scores and assists as Gunners return to winning ways to go top of Premier League

first_imgArsenal bounced back from a heavy Boxing Day defeat to beat Bournemouth 2-0 and return top of the Premier League. The three points means Arsenal could be top going into 2016, depending on tomorrow’s meeting between Leicester and Man City.Arsene Wenger will have wanted to see a reaction from his Gunners side after the 4-0 drubbing at Southampton and they certainly provided that.Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista – starting for the first time in over a month – opened the scoring after heading home Mesut Ozil’s corner – yet another assist for the German playmaker.Another German in Per Mertesacker should have doubled Arsenal’s tally as he headed the ball wide from point-blank range.Ozil was then on the scoresheet in the second half, when he combined well with Olivier Giroud before finishing superbly past Artur Boruc.Defeat for Bournemouth also ends their run of six matches unbeaten, as Eddie Howe’s side boosted their chances of Premier League survival.Arsene Wenger made four changes to the side that lost 48 hours earlier at St Mary’s, with Calum Chambers, Gabriel, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kieran Gibbs coming into the XI.Eddie Howe’s resurgent Bournemouth, meanwhile, went into the tie full of confidence after most recently beating Chelsea, Man United and West Brom and drawing with Swansea. The Cherries’ Josh King was denied with an early shot at Petr Cech, after a quiet start at the Emirates. The home side began to grow into the game and Oxlade-Chamberlain, who looked lively after being restored to the line-up, made an exciting run down the wing to earn the Gunners a corner.Ozil took the resulting set piece to deliver his 16th assist of the season, putting a floated ball to the edge of the six-yard box for Gabriel, 25, to score his first Arsenal goal.Wenger’s men dominated after the goal and they pushed for a second, very nearly adding to their tally when Ozil’s corner came in and Boruc tipped a header onto the post. It ricocheted off the frame and straight at Mertesacker, whose face quickly connected with the ball and trickled past the post from three yards.Bournemouth ventured forward early in the second period, but Cech was on hand to grab Adam Smith’s cross, with the Czech goalkeeper determined to keep a clean sheet after Saturday’s showing. It was then 2-0 after 63 minutes, as Ozil played a one-two with Giroud, getting the return ball inside the box, controlling and finishing well into the far corner, low past the goalkeeper.Arsenal had the ascendancy and nearly grabbed a third when Ramsey pulled the ball back for Giroud, who has scored six goals in his last five Arsenal games, but the Frenchman could not get the ball out of his feet quick enough.Giroud then tested Boruc, who saved well and parried but Walcott could not convert the follow up, as Arsenal ran out comfortable winners in the end. Wycombe 1-1 Villa – little surprise relegation looming for Garde and co.

first_imgIt’s not hard to see why Aston Villa are on course for a place in the Championship next season.Despite there being 54 places between them and opponents Wycombe, they could only draw this FA Cup third round clash.Villa hadn’t kept a clean sheet away from home in the FA Cup since 2009 and they never looked like fixing that leak. And 20 minutes after Micah Richards gave Remi Garde’s side the lead, Joe Jacobson equalised from the spot. The two teams were giving the ball away cheaply in the opening exchanges, but Richards the skipper gave his side the lead after 22 minutes when he calmly slotted the ball past Lynch from 15 yards following work from Carles Gil.The goal was deserved as Villa began to exert some dominance and the fans clearly enjoyed it when they began cheering ‘we’ve scored a goal’.However, just three minutes into the second half Wycombe were awarded a penalty when Ashley Westwood jumped with his arm and caught Matt Bloomfield in the face.Jacobson made no mistake from the spot when he sent Mark Bunn the wrong way.Villa were punished for their lack of urgency and were almost behind moments later when the League Two side went on the attack once again.Sam Wood played it to Thompson whose cross was met by Wood’s volley inside the area, but the effort was cleared off the line by Jores Okore. It was a scruffy second half display from the Premier League club, but as the game entered the last ten minutes, substitute Jordan Ayew displayed some trickery in the box and his shot went inches wide, while Rudy Gestede’s deflected shot bounced off the bar. They looked threatening, but ultimately could not find a way past Wycombe and while boos rang out from the away end, the home support cheered their side off and will look forward to the replay at Villa Park. 1 Joe Jacobson celebrates his penalty against Aston Villa last_img read more

‘Give Jordon Ibe a chance!’ – Murphy on out-of-favour Liverpool starlet

first_imgDanny Murphy has urged Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to hand starlet Jordon Ibe more of a starring role in a Reds shirt after he missed out on a starting spot against Manchester United. The 20-year-old has impressed since making his Premier League breakthrough under former boss Brendan Rodgers last season, yet has struggled to cement a regular place under new boss Klopp.Ibe has netted only three goals in 26 appearances this term – with his most recent the winner in their League Cup victory over Stoke – but it is his pace and ability at taking on opponents which has seen him hailed as one of the club’s most promising young talents. The speedster has started just eight games since the German coach’s arrival and was relegated to the bench for Sunday’s scrappy 1-0 home defeat to rivals United. And former midfielder Murphy believes Ibe deserves to be given more regular game time.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the Anfield hero said: “Jordon Ibe is well thought of at the club and I think he could go on to be a really good player for Liverpool.“But he does need games.“Sometimes Ibe plays with a little bit of fear, fear that maybe he might not be picked next week if he doesn’t play well or makes a mistake.“He needs games to gain a bit of confidence, and when you play more often you get that confidence.“I thought he played really well last week [in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Arsenal], and I love his pace and his ability to go past people.“I was surprised he didn’t start against United, I really was. I’m not sure Jurgen Klopp knows his best 11 at the moment.”last_img read more

She’s a remarkably resilient person. In each case, she’s drawn strength from the good wishes and prayers of people all over the world. I would hope and expect it would be true in this case again.” Eunice Shriver is credited with transforming America’s view of the mentally disabled from institutionalized patients to that of friends, neighbors and athletes. Her efforts were inspired in part by the struggles of her retarded sister, Rosemary. She founded the Special Olympics in 1968. Shriver last appeared publicly just two days before she was hospitalized, when her children held a tribute at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston to her work on behalf of special-needs children. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Wallace going forward – and back

first_imgSometimes I just can’t help myself. After being introduced to Dee Wallace on Saturday night at the Ribbon of Hope Celebration, my first words to her were: “Gosh you look good! Is this 1982 or what?” This is the woman who played Elliot’s divorced mom in “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” 25 years ago and yet, she looks remarkably the same. I wasn’t trying to suck up but was just so astonished and wanted to know her secret. In our latest episode of “As Britney’s World Turns,” our damsel of a mess celebrated her 26th birthday on Saturday night. You didn’t think Britney Spears would stay home did you? After making an appearance at an event hosted by Sharon Stone at Scandinavian Style Mansion, Britney went to the Four Seasons Hotel with cousin Ali Simms and was later joined by Paris Hilton. The birthday girl briefly left the hotel for some unknown reason and when she returned, the paparazzi went wild, chasing her Range Rover into the underground parking garage, according to “Inside Edition.” Apparenty, some photographers got a little too close and refused to move as the birthday girl exited the vehicle. So, hotel security guards sprayed them with a dose of pepper spray! C’mon guys. Is another shot of Britney really worth stinging eyeballs? Sadness for Ross at Kennedy Center For Diana Ross, being one of the five Kennedy Center Honorees on Sunday was a bit bittersweet because her dad wasn’t there. The Motown legend, honored along with Steve Martin, Brian Wilson, Martin Scorsese and pianist Leon Fleisher, traveled to Washington, D.C., from Detroit where funeral services for Fred Ross, were held. “This has been a hard week for me,” Diana told “Entertainment Tonight.” “I lost my father just before coming here and this just brings things to another level. He could have been here.” Diana has been criminally passed over by the Grammys for her entire 45-year career – both as a member of The Supremes and as a solo artist – so it’s great to see her get one of the most prestigious honors any artist can receive.
