In an attempt to express the anger and frustration about the deplorable conditions of the River Cess highway, a traditional devil has begun harassing and extorting money from drivers and company personnel. In order for commercial drivers, private and other public service transport providers not escape the extortion spree of the traditional devil’s well-designed plan, members placed large log at the entrance of the Bailey Bridge constructed by aid-agencies.Late Tuesday morning near the bridge separating River Cess and Sinoe counties in the southeastern Liberia, a dozen men, most of them under the influence, intercepted two Liberian Government vehicles and demanded US$30 from them.Commuters and businesspeople aboard the two affected vehicles have called on authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Traditional Chiefs and the Elders Council of Liberia to admonished members of the traditional societies to stop carrying out such activities.“Such activities on major highways in the country could spark misunderstanding amongst the citizens and residents as people using the highway come from different traditional backgrounds,” the businesspeople stressed.Senior members of the traditional devil’s entourage told the drivers and company’s personnel that their big trucks were the ones spoiling and damaging the River Cess-Sinoe’s highway. The traditional devil members’ assertions could be perhaps due to the companies not adequately addressing the social corporate responsibility components of the concession agreements entered into with the Liberian Government.“Every year during the Rainy Season in River Cess and Sinoe Counties, our roads continue to be spoiled by the big, big companies’ trucks, commercial drivers and other end users,” traditional devil members contended. The two vehicles were released only following extensive 30 minutes of negotiations with members of the River Cess traditional council by an Executive Protective Service (EPS) officer. The EPS officer, who asked not to be named, pleaded with the members of the traditional devil’s entourage to relax their grievances and channel same through the relevant ministries and agencies of the Liberian Government.“I’m indeed aware of your complaints and sentiments and I will convey same to the appropriate government ministries and agencies for a practical solution,” EPS personnel assured. In a brief stop-over at one of the biggest commercial centers of ITI in River Cess County, residents and businesspeople told the Daily Observer that the action of the devil’s members had become a nightly routine. They also underscored the need for the intervention of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Traditional Council of Liberia in order to create an enabling environment for them to carry out their business activities to Sinoe County. The businessmen and women further pointed out that they all respect all the traditional norms of every tribe in Liberia but, their practices should not infringe on the rights of other peaceful citizens doing business on the highways of Sinoe and River Cess counties.“Our concerns and expressions are not meant to disrespect the traditional practices of the River Cess citizens but we only want to do our business activities under a secure environment,” businessman Blamayon Gray emphasized.Meanwhile, several businessmen and women in the ITI commercial district have sounded an urgent appeal to the MIA and central government to hold some discussions with the traditional devil members on the matter.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)
In the Alberta Peace, the RCMP in Valleyview will need the help of a medical examiner, to figure out how many people were involved in a deadly crash shortly before 7 o’clock yesterday morning.Police say the two-vehicle crash was so severe that investigators could not determine how many people were in one vehicle, which they also can’t identify. It was heading westbound on Highway 43, near Range Road 252, and it’s believed it crossed the centre line striking a five ton cube van head on, about 80 kilometers east of Grande Prairie. The driver of the van, a 33-year-old man from Hinton, was not injured, but was forced to cut himself out of his seatbelt as a post-crash-fire intensified.Meantime, shortly before seven o’clock this morning, four people suffered minor injuries in a two vehicle crash, just 5 kilometers north of Grande Prairie, at the entrance to Clairmont on Highway 2.- Advertisement -A 31 year old Grande Prairie woman was the lone occupant of a vehicle, that collided with a truck carrying three men from Devon, all in their twenties. The RCMP says the woman stopped at stop sign, but then proceeded to make a left hand turn crossing in front of the truck.Charges are pending under the Traffic Safety Act, for failing to proceed safely after stopping.
Fianna Fáil TD for Donegal Charlie McConalogue has called on the Tourism Minister and Failte Ireland to work together to secure funding to develop tourism facilities at Malin Head.Charlie McConalogue TDDeputy McConalogue raised the issue with Minister Paschal Donohoe in the Dáil after Donegal County Council approved planning permission for car parking and toilet facilities.Following his exchange with the Minister, Deputy McConalogue commented, “I welcome the fact that Minister Donohoe has stated his support for improving the facilities at Malin Head, but what we need now is action. “The Minister must work with Fáilte Ireland so that funding for these improvement works can be secured.“Malin Head has is unable to offer tourists visiting the area the facilities that they expect and it is imperative that the Minister along with other interest groups now work together to ensure that Malin Head is developed as a top tourist attraction.“Tourism is a vital revenue source for the Inishowen peninsula and stalling on these essential facilities is not an option.“The Wild Atlantic Way has been a fantastic success to date and is only going to increase the number of tourists coming to the area over the next few years and we cannot have a situation where Malin Head is left behind due to the fact it doesn’t have basic facilities. “We already have 100,000 people visiting Malin Head. This number is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we could be bringing to the area.“It is vital that the Minister ensures that Malin Head receives funding without delay so that it can reach its potential in becoming a cornerstone of our vibrant tourism industry.“I will continue to work with the local Malin Head community and Councillor Martin McDermott to advance this important project.”‘MINISTER MUST MOVE TO SECURE FUNDING FOR TOURISM FACILITIES AT MALIN HEAD’ – McCONALOGUE was last modified: June 3rd, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:newsPolitics

Jens Tellefsen, VP of Marketing and Product Strategy at NetBase Solutions spoke to ReadWriteWeb about today’s launch of healthBase – a medical search and discovery application. Using a variety of semantic indexing techniques, the company crawls the web’s leading medical and health players including the Mayo Clinic, PubMed (US National Library of Medicine) WedMd, Medical News Today and Discovery Health. What makes this a truly unique technology is that rather than requiring any data manipulation from humans, Netbase’s search results are completely automated. Says Tellefsen, “Rather than using keywords or basic entities to search through billions of documents, NetBase can actually read and extract linguistic meaning from entire sentences and concepts.” According to Tellefsen, healthBase can determine causal relationships, treatments and conditions and automatically aggregate that data into meaningful answers. Given the fact that more than 75% of the population seeks out online health information, a semantic tool with sentence-level understanding can potentially help dispel medical myths on a massive scale. NetBase employs the same principals across a variety of enterprise tools, but healthBase is its first foray into consumer-facing products. While the company is used to powering corporate, federal and market research, healthBase allows NetBase to show off its content intelligence tool in a way that gives us insight into our selves and our bodies. Because NetBase is not reliant on manual annotation or custom taxonomies, the system is also very scalable. It took roughly 2 days to produce all of the data in healthBase – a feat that would never be possible by a combination human and machine system. “It’s important for us to address real issues with semantic technologies outside of a lab,” Says Tellefsen.
