(AP) — When William Essary took a baseball bat and confronted a man rifling through his car on a Portland street, the prowler yelled “I’m leaving” and started running. But Essary told KATU he didn’t want the man to get away and break into more cars. So, Essary chased the suspect Tuesday for about a quarter of a mile, until he ran out of breath, and held him until police arrived. They recovered identity, gift and food stamp cards as well as phones apparently taken from several cars.last_img
