LA Noire to ship on 3 discs for Xbox 360

first_imgLook at most games released on both Xbox 360 and PS3 simultaneously and you’ll have a hard time telling the difference. They will both look great running on a HD display. However, the cracks are starting to show in Microsoft’s decision to stick with an ageing DVD optical drive instead of selecting a higher capacity solution. This is most clear in Rockstar‘s forthcoming game L.A. Noire. The game is huge in terms of scope, and big in terms of detail. What that adds up to is a lot of data that needs to be shipped, way too much data in fact for the Xbox 360 DVD discs even with Microsoft’s gigabyte of extra space they found earlier this year.So while PS3 gamers will be placing a single L.A. Noire 25GB Blu-ray disc into their consoles, 360 gamers will be carrying home a much heavier case containing not one, not two, but three DVDs.The consequences of this are two-fold. On the one hand L.A. Noire will require two disc changes on the Xbox 360 during a full playthrough. Hopefully Team Bondi has managed to include those changes at points where it won’t seem too frustrating.Thankfully, the case-by-case gameplay should make that decision a simple one.The other consequence is that this game is going to cost Microsoft and Rockstar more to release on the format due to the extra discs required and therefore weight of each game. That may seem minor, but scale it up to millions of copies and that becomes a significant additional cost. There is no solution to this for Microsoft with the Xbox 360. It’s too late to adopt a new drive technology and the next console isn’t going to arrive for another couple of years. So this is something developers and gamers will have to get used to. More games for Microsoft’s console are going to require disc changes in order to keep up with PS3’s texture resolutions and as developers build more expansive games.via Kotakulast_img read more
