If you’ve got a little Ella or Owen at home, you’re in good company. Those were the most popular names for babies born in Nova Scotia in 2010 according to the province’s Registry of Vital Statistics. There were 61 Ellas born in Nova Scotia last year. Hot on Ella’s heels were Olivia (60), Ava (59), Emma (53) and Lily (53). The top five boys’ names were Owen (77), Liam (76), Benjamin (73), Ethan (70), and Jacob (70). “Classic names have been popular with parents for the last several years,” said Michelle MacFarlane, deputy registrar general of vital statistics. “In fact, many of the names on the 2010 list were also on our list from 2001 — names like Emily, Sarah, Jacob and Liam.” There were 8,784 babies born in Nova Scotia in 2010, compared to 8,896 in 2009.
